FIRST PHASE OF SCREENING


Yesterday afternoon the tent camp was abuzz with candidates and their parents showing up for the screening exams. Everyone arrived in an orderly and organized manner with birth certificates for the children. Yesterday only 4 year olds were screened. Later today, the 5 year olds will be screened.

Jocelyne Pierre, Dominique Pierre and Jacqueline Fabius were kindly given a space by the AMERT crew, in the tent clinic at the camp to conduct part of the exams.

The exams consisted of the following criteria:

Motor Skills

  • Running
  • Jumping from one foot to the other
  • Walking on tip toes
  • Standing on one foot at a time
  • Walking on a balance beam
  • Throwing
  • Catching

Language Development

  • Singing
  • Expressing oneself well in Creole
  • Clear enunciation
  • Making complete sentences
  • Communicating favorite or least favorite things
  • Communicating what last meal was and whether it was good or not
  • Names of parents
  • Name of sibling(s)

Auditory Discrimination

  • Identify sounds in the environment
  • Make the sound of a dog
  • Make the sound of a cat
  • Make the sound of a rooster
  • Make the sound of a truck horn

Visual Discrimination

  • Identify basic colors (Blue, Red, Green, Yellow)

Corporal Knowledge

  • Identify own body parts: neck, eyes, mouth, ears, head, knees, arms, fingers, toes, feet, tummy

Lateral Knowledge

  • Point left/right
  • Turn left/right

Identification of Common Objects

  • Knife/Fork/Spoon
  • Cup
  • Soap
  • Bottle
  • Cassave (local dry cracker)
  • Sweet (bag of sugar)
  • Salty (bag of salt)
